Prepare for the Math Assessment and the essays

Build math accuracy and timed pacing, and give yourself enough drafts to write the essays well.

Checked against NCSSM's published admissions pages on October 18, 2026.

Testing

The NCSSM Math Assessment.

Who takes it
Class of 2029 applicants to the residential campuses (Durham and/or Morganton) are required to take the NCSSM Math Assessment as part of their application.
Format
The NCSSM Mathematics Admissions Assessment is a 30-question, 40-minute assessment taken without a calculator.
What it covers
The questions measure pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry topics. NCSSM says the material is usually taught in seventh grade, eighth grade, Math 1, and Algebra 1 courses across North Carolina.
NCSSM practice material
NCSSM links a Math Test Preview and Math Assessment Examples for applicants.
  1. 01

Take one full timed practice under test conditions before building a study plan.

  2. 02

Practice accuracy first, then speed. With no calculator, clean written work matters.

Math Assessment

Math Assessment day.

Name
The NCSSM Math Assessment was formerly known as NCSSM Discovery Day, and this year's version has an updated format.
Dates
NCSSM's How to Apply page lists February 13 and February 20, 2027 as Math Assessment dates at both campuses. Its Announcements page still lists the dates as TBD, so confirm on ncssm.edu before planning around one.
On the day
The Math Assessment event is for students only, lasts 1.5 hours, and no longer includes a campus tour.
Registration
Applicants register for the Math Assessment in their Blackbaud account. NCSSM emails Blackbaud login information in mid-January.
  1. 01

Confirm the date and campus on ncssm.edu before you plan travel.

Essays

The essays.

Essay questions
NCSSM publishes essay questions in separate documents for Residential and Online applicants and for Summer Ventures applicants. Students submit only one application.
What essays show
NCSSM says critical reading and writing ability can be demonstrated through the essay responses. It also says enthusiasm for STEM, need for NCSSM, and work ethic can be demonstrated through the application, essays, and academic record.
Need for NCSSM
NCSSM describes "Need for NCSSM" as whether NCSSM offers something unique and essential that the student's current school, no matter how good, might not be able to provide.
  1. 01

Read the current essay questions on NCSSM's site before you start drafting.

  2. 02

Write about specific things your student has done, built, or wondered about, not general statements of interest.

  3. 03

Leave time for at least two full drafts and a read-aloud pass before the application closes.

Preparation plan

A preparation plan that works backward from the deadline.

Adjust the pace to your student's schedule. The order matters more than the exact weeks.

  1. Week 1

    Take one timed practice test

Use a practice test under real timing. Note where time ran short and which topics felt unfamiliar.

  2. Weeks 2-4

    Build math accuracy

Work pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry by hand, check answers, and keep an error log.

  3. Weeks 3-6

    Draft the essays

Start from specific moments and projects, submit a draft for edits, and revise using the notes.

  4. Weeks 5-8

    Repeat timed practice

Take full practice tests on a schedule and watch the error log shrink.

  5. Final two weeks

    Polish and submit early

Read every essay aloud, confirm evaluators have what they need, and submit before the last day.

  6. After submitting

    Keep practicing

Keep the math sharp for the Math Assessment and finish the remaining steps on the NCSSM checklist.
