About NCSSMPrep

Your student gets one NCSSM application. It should sound like them.

NCSSMPrep is EduAvenues' program for North Carolina families applying to NCSSM. We help tenth graders write essays that sound like them and walk into the Math Assessment prepared.

Here's what you're up against.

Picture your student on a weeknight this winter: homework done, laptop open, the NCSSM essay questions on the screen and a blinking cursor underneath. They love science. They have real stories. But they have never written about themselves for strangers, and nobody around them has seen this application.

Around the essays sits everything else: residency paperwork, teacher evaluations, a math assessment, and deadlines that do not move. Most of their friends are not applying. Forums disagree. Advice from a few years ago describes a process that has changed since.

None of that is your fault, and none of it means your student is not ready. It means they deserve clear guidance and honest notes on their own writing, from people who know how selective admissions works.

What NCSSM publishes

  • All sections of the Class of 2029 application must be completed on CFNC.org by 11:59 PM on Tuesday, January 5, 2027. NCSSM says there are no exceptions to this deadline.
  • A student can complete and submit an application to the Residential and Online programs only once during their academic career.
  • NCSSM says all decisions are final and there is no appeals process. It does not review applications with students or families and does not share Math Assessment scores.
  • The NCSSM Math Assessment was formerly known as NCSSM Discovery Day, and this year's version has an updated format.

We went through this. That's why we built it.

Growing up in Fairfax County, I applied to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and my parents signed me up for a prep program. The instructor had never set foot inside TJ. There were 30 students in a single classroom, almost no feedback on our writing, and templates that had nothing to do with the real application. On test day, we realized we had been preparing for something else.

My friend Vishnu was right there with me, in the same classroom, with the same feeling that families deserved something better. We talked about it all through high school and into college. Vishnu passed away far too young, but his conviction never left me. EduAvenues carries his belief forward: if you are going to do this, do it right, and do it for the families who need it most.

So we built what should have existed.

After UVA's McIntire School of Commerce and five years in financial services, including time at Goldman Sachs and at Evergreen by Alpine Investors in private equity, I walked away because this mattered more. I also served on the Board of Directors of the TJHSST Partnership (Endowment) Fund. This isn't just work for me. It's personal.

NCSSM families deserve that same honesty. An NCSSM application should sound like a real tenth grader who loves to figure things out, not a template. Our instructors give line-by-line notes on your student's own essay drafts, and the Math Assessment practice follows the format NCSSM describes, so test day holds fewer surprises.

Today our instructors include graduates of schools like Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, Columbia, and UVA, and our team has spent more than a decade helping families through selective admissions. Meet the EduAvenues instructors.

And we built it to fit into your family's life. Lessons are online and self-paced. Prep should work around school, sports, music, and family dinners, not replace them.
