NCSSM Admissions Overview
NCSSM admissions, step by step.
Eligibility and residency decide who can apply, so start there. Then check what the application asks for and which program fits.
Checked against NCSSM's published admissions pages on October 18, 2026.
Who can apply
Who can apply.
Confirm every rule before planning preparation, starting with residency.
- Entry year
- Students apply in their second year of high school to the Residential and Online programs, so they attend as juniors and seniors.
- One application per student
- A student can complete and submit an application to the Residential and Online programs only once during their academic career.
- Residency
- Only bona fide legal residents (domiciliaries) of North Carolina are eligible to attend NCSSM. Non-residents are ineligible for admission.
- Military families
- A student whose parent is an active duty member of the armed services and is living in North Carolina because of that duty can also be eligible if the student shares the parent's home.
- Residency deadline policy
- NCSSM's policy is to enroll only students whose custodial parent or legal guardian has established permanent legal residency in North Carolina by December 1 of the school year in which the student applies.
- Residency application
- Students who apply to NCSSM-Durham, NCSSM-Morganton, or NCSSM Online must complete the North Carolina Residency Determination Service (RDS) process.
- Deferred Action (DACA)
- NCSSM currently lists students who have received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) as ineligible to apply for enrollment.
- Second homes
- A beach or vacation home in North Carolina does not by itself make a family North Carolina residents.
- 01
Check residency against your own documents, not memory, well before the application closes.
- 02
NCSSM's pages do not all print the same residency date for this application year. Confirm the date with NCSSM's residency office before planning around it.
- 03
Questions about immigration status or documents go to NCSSM's residency office. Eligibility depends on the documents a family holds.
- 04
If anything is unclear, ask NCSSM in writing and keep the reply.
The application
What the application includes.
- Application
- Applicants apply through the NCSSM electronic application on CFNC.org, which requires a CFNC account.
- Cost
- NCSSM says there is no application fee and no cost for tuition, meals, room and board, or textbooks for its Residential, Online, and Summer Ventures programs.
- Evaluations
- Evaluations are required by February 28 from a 9th or 10th grade STEM teacher, a 9th or 10th grade English teacher, and the applicant's current 10th grade guidance counselor.
- How evaluations work
- Evaluations are not traditional letters. Applicants give NCSSM their evaluators' contact information, and NCSSM sends each evaluator a link to a structured online form.
- Late evaluations
- NCSSM says students will not be penalized if an evaluation is submitted after the initial contact information has been provided.
- Transcripts
- The window for submitting transcripts and report cards opens on February 15, 2027, and closes on February 28, 2027.
- Offers
- An offer of enrollment is contingent on NCSSM receiving a transcript that comes from the home high school itself.
- SAT and ACT
- Class of 2029 applicants are not required to take the SAT or ACT. NCSSM will not accept or consider standardized test scores as part of the admissions process.
- NCSSM warns that email providers other than Apple and Google often filter or block its messages, which can cause an applicant to miss a deadline.
- 01
Give your evaluators their contact details early and tell them what NCSSM will send.
- 02
Use an email address NCSSM can reach, and check spam folders during the application window.
Programs
Three ways in, and what comes after.
One application covers all three programs. Pick the one that fits your student.
- One application
- Eligible applicants can apply to the Residential program (Durham and/or Morganton), Online, or Summer Ventures, or all three, using one electronic application.
- Residential
- More than 980 students live and learn in the Residential program across the two campuses: about 680 each year in Durham and about 300 in Morganton.
- NCSSM Online
- NCSSM Online is a supplemental, two-year, sequenced honors program for students who remain enrolled at their local schools.
- Online format
- NCSSM Online is for 11th- and 12th-graders and includes a Saturday session at NCSSM-Durham or NCSSM-Morganton once per semester.
- Summer Ventures
- Summer Ventures applicants must be in their second or third year of high school.
- UNC System admission
- NCSSM states that Residential program graduates who complete all of NCSSM's graduation requirements and remain in good standing with a weighted GPA at or above the threshold set by the UNC System president and NCSSM chancellor (currently 3.5) are guaranteed admission to any UNC System universities to which they apply.
- What it does not cover
- NCSSM says the guarantee does not promise acceptance into specific schools, colleges, or programs of study within a university. It applies to Residential graduates beginning with the Class of 2022, and NCSSM Online students are not eligible.
- 01
Read the conditions for UNC System admission on NCSSM's page before relying on it. It is NCSSM's statement, it can change, and some university programs have their own admission requirements.
