NCSSM Admissions Timeline for 2026-27: Dates and Deadlines

NCSSM Class of 2029 timeline: application opens Oct. 15, closes Jan. 5, plus residency, evaluations, transcripts and the Math Assessment.

NCSSM's 2026-27 application for the Class of 2029 opens on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 4:00 PM and closes on Tuesday, January 5, 2027, at 11:59 PM. After that, the remaining steps (residency, evaluations, transcripts, the Math Assessment) run through February 2027. NCSSM has not yet published a decision release date, so check its admissions site for that.

This timeline covers the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) Residential programs in Durham and Morganton and NCSSM Online. All of them use one application. Every date below comes from NCSSM's own admissions pages, read on October 22, 2026. Where NCSSM's pages disagree or show "TBD," this guide says so instead of guessing.

Who this timeline is for

NCSSM is a public, two-year residential high school for North Carolina students interested in STEM, offered in Durham and Morganton. Applicants for the Residential and Online programs must be in their second year of high school, so they apply in 10th grade and attend as juniors and seniors. NCSSM says a student can complete and submit an application to the Residential and Online programs only once, so the 10th-grade year is the one chance.

There is no application fee, and NCSSM says there is no cost for tuition, meals, room and board, or textbooks for its Residential, Online, and Summer Ventures programs.

  • February 28, 2027: Evaluations are due from a 9th or 10th grade STEM teacher, a 9th or 10th grade English teacher, and your current 10th grade guidance counselor.

Step by step through the year

October: open the application

The application opens on October 15, 2026, and you complete it on CFNC.org, the College Foundation of North Carolina site. NCSSM requires a CFNC account to apply. Create the account early and keep the login, because you will use the same CFNC login to complete the residency application in RDS.

One application covers the Residential program (Durham, Morganton, or both), Online, and Summer Ventures. NCSSM publishes the essay questions in two separate documents, one for Residential and Online applicants and one for Summer Ventures applicants, but you submit only one application.

NCSSM also warns that email providers other than Apple and Google often filter or block its messages, which can cause an applicant to miss a deadline. Use an Apple or Google address if you can.

October and November: open houses

NCSSM-Durham holds its high school open house on Saturday, October 24, 2026. NCSSM-Morganton holds its high school open house on Saturday, November 7, 2026. NCSSM's pages list the dates, but we did not find start times or registration steps, so check the admissions site before you plan a trip.

January 5: the application deadline

Every section of the application must be complete on CFNC.org by 11:59 PM on January 5, 2027. NCSSM says there are no exceptions. Treat the first week of January as a hard stop and finish days earlier, especially since the deadline falls right after the winter holidays.

Standardized tests are not part of the picture. NCSSM says Class of 2029 applicants are not required to take the SAT or ACT, and that standardized test scores will not be accepted or considered in admissions.

January 30: residency

All applicants to NCSSM-Durham, NCSSM-Morganton, or NCSSM Online must complete the North Carolina Residency Determination Service (RDS) process, and the Class of 2029 deadline is January 30, 2027. NCSSM says that without an RDS number a student cannot complete the application on CFNC.org, so start RDS early rather than waiting for the deadline.

NCSSM's policy is to enroll only students whose custodial parent or legal guardian has established permanent legal residency in North Carolina by December 1 of the school year in which the student applies. NCSSM's How to Apply page prints "TBA" for the residency date, and its Announcements page says recent residency changes do not affect Class of 2029 applicants. If your family moved to North Carolina recently, confirm your situation with NCSSM before you apply.

Mid-January: Blackbaud login for the Math Assessment

NCSSM says it will send Blackbaud login information by email in mid-January. Applicants use that Blackbaud account to register for the Math Assessment and, if they choose, to self-report a transcript. Watch the inbox you listed on the application, and check spam.

February: transcripts, evaluations, and the Math Assessment

The transcript window opens on February 15, 2027, and closes on February 28, 2027. NCSSM's page describes three ways to provide it: through CFNC, by having your counselor mail or email a copy, or by self-reporting a copy in Blackbaud. Year-long courses also require a report card. An offer of enrollment is contingent on NCSSM receiving a transcript from your home high school itself.

Evaluations are due February 28. They are not traditional letters. You give NCSSM your evaluators' contact information, and NCSSM emails each one a link to a structured online form. NCSSM says students will not be penalized if an evaluation is submitted after the initial contact information has been provided.

The NCSSM Math Assessment, formerly known as NCSSM Discovery Day, is required for applicants to the residential campuses. The How to Apply page lists February 13, 2027 and February 20, 2027 at both campuses. However, NCSSM's Announcements page still shows the dates as "TBD." Because the two pages disagree, confirm the date and location on NCSSM's admissions site before you rely on either one. The event is for students only, lasts about 1.5 hours, and no longer includes a campus tour.

Spring: decisions

NCSSM lists "Status Notifications released TBD," and we did not find a published release date or an enrollment reply deadline. NCSSM's Announcements page lists Welcome Day for accepted students on Saturday, April 17, 2027 at Durham and Saturday, April 24, 2027 at Morganton. NCSSM says all decisions are final and there is no appeals process. It does not review applications with students or families and does not share Math Assessment scores.

Common timeline mistakes

  • Waiting for February to ask teachers. Evaluations are due February 28, and the form goes out only after you submit contact information. Line up a STEM teacher, an English teacher, and your counselor in the fall.
  • Using an email address that blocks NCSSM. Give an Apple or Google address if you have one, and add NCSSM to your safe sender list.
  • Missing the RDS step. It is separate from the CFNC application and has its own January 30 deadline.
  • Treating the Math Assessment as a campus visit. NCSSM says the event no longer includes a tour. Go to an open house if you want to see the campus.
  • Planning around an unconfirmed date. NCSSM's pages disagree on the Math Assessment dates, so verify before you book travel.
